The St. Louis County Council will consider a plan Tuesday night to rezone 377 acres from industrial to commercial to make way for a $350 million casino complex in north St. Louis County.
In September, the St. Louis County Planning Commission recommended that the County Council approve the project, proposed for north of Interstate 270 and immediately south of the 4,318-acre Columbia Bottom Conservation Area near Spanish Lake.
The commission warned that the project faces engineering challenges because it’s located on a floodplain.
The council will vote Tuesday night on whether to rezone 377 acres from industrial and floodplain industrial to commercial and floodplain commercial, said Gail Choate, land use manager for the St. Louis County Department of Planning.
Attorney Brad Lakin of LakinChapman LLC and his wife, Hallie Lakin, executive Kenneth Goldstein of Argo Products Co. and real estate investor Julie McDonald are the principals of North County Development LLC, the firm behind the development project.
The project would still need to obtain a gaming license from the Missouri Gaming Commission.
Some residents have criticized the development, calling it detrimental to local wildlife and a waste of taxpayers’ money for road improvements and sewers.
